Suicide Prevention with counselor

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness month, and recently Tabasco students in 3rd through 5th Grade got the opportunity to hear important information about caring for oneself from Counselor A. Garcia and Nurse A. Castro.

Students were informed about tips for self-care and hygiene from the school nurse, including the importance of brushing their teeth every day, staying clean, and how important it is to have a good night’s rest every day to not only their physical body, but how well their mind works.

Students then got the opportunity to discuss the importance of suicide prevention awareness with our school counselor. Mrs. A. Garcia helped students understand what warning signs and behavioral signs to look for, not only in themselves but in friends and others they might know. Students also got to know the techniques to help relax and calm their minds.

Inner Explorer is one tool offered by Tabasco Elementary that helps students learn breathing skills and mental calming techniques. Mrs. Garcia presented students with a tutorial and reminded them that they have this available to them.

Anyone with questions on these topics can contact Nurse Castro (a.castro3@lajoyaisd.net) or Counselor Garcia (a.garcia16@lajoyaisd.net) at Tabasco Elementary at (956) 323-2440.
